Buscopan (hyoscine butylbromide) is an antispasmodic medicine available over the counter in Ireland for the relief of stomach cramps, abdominal spasms, and the cramping pain associated with irritable bowel syndrome. Two formulations are available without a prescription: Buscopan Cramps, which contains 10 mg hyoscine butylbromide per tablet, and Buscopan IBS Relief, which is licensed specifically for diagnosed IBS in adults aged 18 and over. Buscopan works by relaxing the smooth muscle of the gut wall, which eases the spasm that causes cramping pain. It is not a laxative and does not treat diarrhoea or constipation directly. It is not suitable for everyone - people with certain conditions, including glaucoma or an enlarged prostate, should not use it without medical advice.
